Okemo & Ludlow: A Four-Season Guide to Vermont's Most Welcoming Mountain Town

Pine trees on a mountainside at sunset near Okemo, Vermont

Okemo Mountain and the village of Ludlow below it make up one of the most welcoming corners of Vermont — less famous than Killington, less precious than Woodstock, and somehow better for it. Families love it, groups love it, and off-season travelers quietly love it most of all. Here's the full guide.

Why Okemo / Ludlow

The pitch is simple: a midsize mountain with meticulous grooming, ski-in/ski-out options that don't require a second mortgage, and a walkable village with real restaurants and a strong local identity. It's the Vermont mountain town that works in every season.

The Mountain

Okemo has 667 skiable acres across 121 trails, topped by the Jackson Gore area — a self-contained village at the north end of the resort with its own lifts, lodging, and dining. The grooming here is legitimately among the best in the East, which makes it a favorite for intermediate skiers and families.

Terrain Highlights

  • Jackson Gore — the best beginner and intermediate pod on the mountain
  • Solitude Peak — mellow groomers with beautiful views
  • South Face — steeper pitches and tree skiing
  • Coleman Brook Glades — our favorite stash on a powder day

Non-Ski Winter

  • Tubing at Adventure Zone — the kids will beg to go twice
  • Ice skating on Jackson Gore's outdoor rink — open late every night
  • Spa at the Jackson Gore Inn — full menu, excellent après treatments

Ludlow Village

Drive five minutes down Okemo Ridge Road and you're in Ludlow proper. Main Street is compact and walkable, with several excellent restaurants, a good bookstore, and local shops that aren't just tourist facing.

Don't Miss

  • Homestyle Hostel — genuinely outstanding New American in a relaxed setting
  • Mojo Cafe — Cajun, imaginative, and a local institution
  • The Downtown Grocery — fine dining that punches well above the village size
  • Goodman's American Pie — wood-fired pizza, great after a ski day
  • The Killarney Irish Pub — for live music and a proper pint

Beyond Winter

Summer & Fall

Okemo's lift-served mountain biking, disc golf, and adventure zone run all summer. The surrounding area has some of the best swimming holes in southern Vermont — Buttermilk Falls is ten minutes from the village. Fall brings foliage that rivals anywhere in the state, without the Woodstock crowds.

Spring & Shoulder Seasons

Ludlow quiets down dramatically in April and November, which is exactly when our homes here are the best deal. For writers, couples, and anyone who wants the village to themselves, these are the sleeper months.

Where to Stay

Ludlow-area homes split between three zones:

  1. Jackson Gore / Okemo Ridge — true ski-in/ski-out, best for serious ski trips
  2. Ludlow Village — walkable to restaurants, 5 minutes to the lift
  3. Lake Rescue / Echo Lake — quieter, lakefront, excellent summer picks

All our Ludlow-area homes come with ski gear storage, hot tubs, and pre-stocked kitchens, plus the same hotel-level service you'd get in Quechee or Woodstock.

Getting There

  • From Boston: 2 hr 45 min
  • From NYC: 4 hr 45 min
  • From Killington: 30 minutes — worth pairing for a multi-mountain trip

The best mountain towns aren't the ones that try hardest. They're the ones that know what they are. That's Ludlow.
