They call it the Beast of the East for a reason. Killington's 1,500+ skiable acres span six peaks, and when the snow starts falling in late October, it's often the first resort open on the East Coast and the last to close in the spring. But a great Killington trip isn't only about the mountain — it's about pairing serious skiing with the kind of well-located, well-appointed home that makes the whole experience feel effortless.
The Mountain
Killington's size is its superpower. Six peaks, 155 trails, 21 lifts. Beginners have entire sections of mellow groomers on Snowshed and Ramshead; intermediates live on the Superstar chairlift; experts chase steeps off Bear Mountain and the legendary Outer Limits, one of the most famous moguls runs in the country. And the season is long — Killington averages 250 inches and routinely skis into May.
Where to Start
- First day, mixed group: Base at Ramshead, work up to Snowshed, then progress to the Killington Peak gondola
- Advanced skiers: Park at Bear Mountain for the fastest access to steeps and glades
- Families: Ramshead has the best beginner terrain and the easiest logistics with kids
Beyond the Slopes
The Village
Killington's slope-side village is compact but walkable, with a handful of solid restaurants, a brewery, and the après-ski scene at Pickle Barrel and Wobbly Barn (iconic, loud, fun). For something quieter, drive 10 minutes down to Killington Road or into Rutland for a broader range.
Dining Highlights
- Choices Restaurant — the locals' pick, consistently excellent
- Liquid Art — coffee and brunch done right
- Peak Lodge at the top of the gondola — the views alone are worth the trip
- The Foundry at Summit Pond — fireside cocktails, great burger
Non-Ski Days
Even the hardest chargers need a rest day. Our recommendations:
- Nordic skiing at Mountain Meadows — 30 km of groomed trails, 10 minutes from the resort
- Snowshoeing at Gifford Woods State Park — quiet, beautiful, free
- Spa day at the Woodstock Inn — 20 minutes away and worth the drive
- Quechee Gorge in snow — genuinely dramatic in winter
When to Go
- Early season (Nov–Dec): Limited terrain but genuine snow and small crowds. Killington's Opening Weekend is a New England tradition.
- Peak (Jan–Feb): Full mountain open, cold smoke, and the best snow quality
- Spring (March–April): Warm sun, soft snow, and the famous Superstar Glades that ski into May
- Bluebird weekends: Book midweek if you can. Weekends fill up fast, especially from MLK Day through President's Week.
Where to Stay
Staying on the mountain is convenient, but our Killington-area homes in Plymouth, Mendon, and Chittenden put you 10–20 minutes from the base with real Vermont character and privacy you won't find in condos. All homes come with ski gear storage, hot tubs, and pre-stocked kitchens — so you can ski hard and relax harder.
A well-designed ski trip isn't about maximizing lift time. It's about making every part — the drive in, the post-ski soak, the long group dinner — feel like it belongs.
